We tend to think of philanthropy as a private affair, but most donations really come from people with middle-class earnings. The most recent data was used to draw comparisons across the 50 states on 19 measures of philanthropic activity. How much money individuals give to charity and the percentage of the population that volunteers are the most reliable indicators of generosity.
This week, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates gave $20 billion to his organization. The plan is to donate almost all of his fortune, which will remove him from Forbes' list of the world's richest individuals, and use that money to effect positive social change. Disease, poverty, and a lack of education are among the worldwide issues he claims to want to tackle. He wants to end world hunger, save more lives among children, and stop epidemics from spreading. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was established in 2000 by Gates and his wife, Melinda French. As time has passed, it has grown to become one of the world's biggest philanthropic organisation. Meryl Streep is perhaps the most acclaimed actress of all time and a multiple award winner. Moreover, she has evolved into a vocal feminist who campaigns for equal rights for women throughout the globe. The Danish novelist Isak Dinesen from "Out of Africa" and the British prime minister Margaret Thatcher from "The Iron Lady" are just two of the numerous roles Meryl has played throughout her acting career. She has been honored with six Golden Globes, three Academy Awards, and a Cannes prize for her work. Meryl's philanthropic efforts span several years and various organizations. Via their foundation, the Silver Mountain Foundation, she and her husband, the sculptor Don Gummer, have donated millions of dollars to several causes. They have also given to the New York City Meals on Wheels program, the Coalition for the Homeless, and Vassar College. Former KB Home and SunAmerica co-founder Eli Broad is active in the nonprofit sector. They have donated almost $4 billion to many fields of study and research. In his autobiography, he said that his "why not" attitude is what motivates his charity work. Twenty million dollars were donated to Michigan State University in 1991 to establish the Eli Broad College of Business and the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management in his name. The goal was to boost the university's new full-time MBA program to a level of national significance. He and his wife gave $100 million to universities in 2003 to create what is now known as the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Its goal is to increase the efficiency of public school administrators via the implementation of new research, curriculum, and policy initiatives. The Microsoft co-creator Paul Allen has given away two billion dollars to charity. His interests are in the scientific, artistic, and environmental realms. He has institutions dedicated to the study of the brain and artificial intelligence, as well as museums dedicated to rock music and antique computers. He has also contributed to scientific grant financing for researchers who have had trouble securing money from more conventional avenues. Allen put up $100 million to start the Allen Center for Brain Research in 2003. The institution tackles scientific projects using Big Science and open science methodologies. He's also investing heavily in the search for alien life and space travel. To create a sub-orbital vehicle that could go to space twice in five days, he established Mojave Aerospace Ventures in 2002. Phil Knight, the CEO and creator of Nike, have given up a lot of his fortune. The manner he does it, though, makes it unclear if his act of charity is driven by true kindness or only tax avoidance. The multi-billionaire entrepreneur made high-quality athletic apparel affordable for the masses, establishing one of the most powerful brands in the world. He has donated over a billion dollars to educational institutions, including his alma school, Eugene's University of Oregon. Since 2007, he and his wife, Penny, have given the institution a total of $1.6 billion. Their initial contribution went towards establishing a center for cardiovascular research. The subsequent step was to provide financial support for a cancer-prevention initiative.
